AP Artist Statement

Awareness Ribbons

My AP work Focuses on awareness ribbons. Each Ribbon with a different figure. With these works my goal was for the viewer to be able to sympathize with the people in the works, or maybe have a better understanding of what its like for those who can Identify with said ribbon(s). Another goal I had was for the people who DO identify with certain ribbons  to feel a sense of community and be reminded that they are not alone in  their hardships. Some of these works are personal to me that I can identify with while others where simply topics I felt strongly about or wanted to bring awareness to.

I originally got the idea for this series while scrolling through social media and seeing a post during Domestic Violence awareness month showing a purple ribbon. I had originally only thought ribbons were for cancers and more medical illnesses, but they represent so much more than just those issues. Me being the self-expressing artist I am, I immediately got ideas for pieces that I could do to reflect my life and hardships. I love doing self-portraits and I have enjoyed working with ribbons in the past in my drawings, I fell in love with being able to say so much in a piece with just a certain color of ribbon.
